Description
Abstract This study aimed, firstly, to determine whether 22-day and 9-day courses at Outward Bound New Zealand (OBNZ) enhanced participants' personal and interpersonal development and, secondly, to develop a greater understanding of how the outcomes were achieved. A mixed methodology was used involving a self-concept questionnaire and semi-open-ended written responses six months after the end of the courses. The findings indicated that the main outcomes of the OBNZ courses were aspects of personal development and interpersonal effectiveness, particularly improved self-confidence and better relationships. Key elements of the educational process appeared to be the instructors and the course atmosphere. The diversity and maturity within the group were also important in accelerating the development of group dynamics and a safe and positive learning environment. The findings also illustrated that a mixed methodology was an appropriate and effective way of linking the study of outcomes with the investigation of the educational process.
